As the air gradually gets crisper and the daylight a little shorter, it’s difficult not to start fantasizing about cozy sweaters, boots and warm mugs of hot chocolate. A simple scroll through social media confirms that I am not alone in this. And though I am still abiding with my no-shopping year, there’s no harm in online browsing as long as the credit card stays out of reach. In fact, I think I would even encourage this virtual (or even real-life) window shopping every once in a while to find inspiration and as a way to get to know your personal style.
My plan at the moment is to use this wishlist as a guide and, after consulting my fall wardrobe to see if there are any gaps I need to fill, hit the thrift stores to see if I can find a second-hand version. I’ll update you all on my first true attempt at thrift shopping when that happens, but for now let’s take a look at some of the fall basics – all found within ethical brands, of course:
1. .06 Caramel Lightweight Alpaca Sweater – Zady
I like this caramel colour, but if you prefer, it also comes in black and grey. It would make a great layering piece, and the alpaca wool is sure to keep you warm.
2. The Swing Trench – Everlane
I like this one specifically because of the relaxed, boyish fit and the sage green colour it comes in (also comes in black, navy, tan and birch). They’ve also got a more traditional trench coat here.
3. The Pleated Skirt – Everlane
This quite possibly could be the most versatile skirt you could own this season. From sneakers to boots to heels, or from t-shirts to chunky sweater to blouses, it could be paired with almost anything and still look the part, all while giving off a fully autumnal spirit.
Oh, and if you’re looking for something similar but shorter, they’ve got that too right here.
Everlane kills it in the basics department, if you haven’t already noticed.
4. Open Cashmere Cardigan – Cuyana
This 100% Italian Cashmere cardigan finds the perfect balance between casual and polished.
5. Serafina Dress – Reformation
This long-sleeve dress can easily be a fall transitional piece, paired with some dark Swedish Stockings ecofriendly pantyhose, a leather jacket and booties.
Though I guess technically a pattern and not necessarily “basic”, it’s a fall staple that will always make you feel like you’re wearing a warm hug. You can find them at Sitka (pictured above, made in Canada!) or Patagonia (made of organic cotton!).
