Here’s the thing – I never thought I’d really get into the whole “wooden watch” thing. It has always seemed a bit too tree-hugger, granola style for me, and as someone who is trying to show that sustainable fashion doesn’t have to look so literally “eco”, I never had much interest in them. That is, of course, until Wils Fabrik sent me an email.
Wils Fabrik makes wooden watches that are perfect for those of us who want to stay modern and stylish while we embark on our sustainable fashion journeys. There are watches made of all sorts of wood and colours (the one featured here is the Cozet watch), come in different sizes, and are even sent to you in a gorgeous wooden box, with all the tools you need to remove links if needed. The wood itself comes from FSC verified sources, which means the wood was responsibly sourced rather than a result of deforestation, and then the individual pieces are made in Hong Kong (the founder’s birthplace!), and then assembled in Berlin, Germany.
As if making sustainable and gorgeous wooden watches wasn’t enough, Wils Fabrik also aims to improve lives through more accessible education. They donate three books to libraries in underdeveloped countries for every watch that is purchased, and often donate stationary and other school supplies.
And as for the quality, wear and feel of the wooden watch itself? It’s awesome. The wood is lightweight, smooth, and doesn’t feel as cold, or stick to your skin when its warm, the same way a watch face with metal backing or leather straps would. For the Cozet watch specifically, I love that the walnut lumber that the watch is made of is subtle enough to not look “tree-hugger”, while still maintaining some woodgrain for interest. Definitely a great every day watch!
